Wedding Daze
Liv (Kate Hudson) and Emma (Anne Hathway) have been best friends ever since they were little girls, sharing everything – including a dream of a June wedding at New York’s iconic Plaza Hotel. When they both get engaged at the same time, it seems their dreams are coming true until, that is, a clerical mistake means their weddings are booked on the same day. As neither Liv nor Emma is prepared to delay their nuptials, their friendship begins to disintegrate as they resort to more and more outlandish methods to try to scupper each other’s big day.
Ok, so Bride Wars aint high-intellect but, as chick flicks go, it’s not bad. Although Hudson and Hathaway have both turned in far better performances – in Almost Famous and The Devil Wears Prada, for example – they take on their roles with relish, and their energy is infectious. Which is important, as their behaviour treads a fine line between being childishly comic and plain mean, but luckily the actresses are charming enough to keep it on the right side of funny. Although their characters are pretty much one-dimensional, it’s an easy watch and, at just about 90 minutes, doesn’t overstay its welcome. If you take it at face value, Bride Wars is passable entertainment; those looking for deep and meaningful cinematic thought should look elsewhere. 3 stars
Extra Features
There are seven deleted and two improvised scenes, which don't really add much to proceedings. Several featurettes look at various aspects of the movie, including the dresses, the Plaza and the characters, while the Blu-ray release also includes a digital copy of the film. 3 stars
