If the rise in the number of celebrity chefs and TV programmes dedicated to all things gastronomic tells us anything, it's that cooking is sexy. But before the likes of Nigella Lawson came Julia Child, the American domestic goddess who revolutionised the art of TV cookery, and her achievements are celebrated in new drama Julie & Julia. Based on Child's own memoirs, the film stars Meryl Streep as Julia - and that's surely reason enough to mark it in your diary.
It's a real bonus, then, that Streep's co-star is the divine Amy Adams (Sunshine Cleaning, Doubt). She plays Julie Powell who, in 2002, created a blog in which she attempted to cook every single recipe in Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking. The blog became so successful that she wrote a book, on which this movie is based.Julie & Julia, which is adapted and directed by Norah Ephron (When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle) tells of the very different lives of these two women, who are connected only through their love of great grub. A must-see for any foodie worth their salt, it opens in the USA on August 7 and in the UK on September 11.
