I have been writing about international film for various print and online publications for the past decade, and currently edit bi-monthly UK film mag movieScope. Dedicated to the craft of filmmaking and the art of cinema, it's a must-read whether you're a movie maker or film fan. I have loved films ever since I saw Gone With the Wind on TV one Sunday morning, and while studying cinema at Leicester University I became a reviewer for the student paper, Ripple, taking over as Film Editor in my final year.
After graduating I got a job at the UK's longest running movie mag Film Review where I worked my way up from producation assistant to becoming the first female Editor in its history. I have written about film and culture for a variety of magazines and websites, including BBC Online, Little White Lies, Filmstar and Kodak's In Camera, and am a member of the Alliance of Women Film Journalists and British Society of Magazine Editors. Nikki Has Just Watched...
A few days ago I read and thoroughly enjoyed Film Critic Hulk’s wonderful list of reasons why he loves the movies over at Badass Digital. And earlier today I read Quint’s equally as fascinating list of his reasons why he has a passion for the cinema at Aint It Cool; a list he’d put together with the blessing of Film Critic Hulk of course. In fact, with both Quint and Film Critic Hulk encouraging us to think about and share our own reasons for loving the movies, I was inspired to do so myself.
Director Michael Sucsy knows how to deliver on the promise of a great script. After his successful HBO film, Grey Gardens, he was the perfect choice to helm The Vow because he was able to discover things about the story that no one else had thought about. “I just thought it sounded like an incredible premise for a film,” says Sucsy. “The fact that two people are already in love when the movie starts, and then they’re ripped apart, and then they have to find a way back to each other. That really touched me.”
Roll Credits sat down with Sucsy to talk about filming The Vow and how he found the right talent to bring the characters to life. He told us about the casting process and reteaming with Jessica Lange, why the budget and day count were major challenges on this shoot, and what it was like collaborating creatively with a terrific editor like Nancy Richardson.
For his feature debut, Danish filmmaker Asger Leth follows his 2006 documentary Ghosts of Cite Soleil (co-directed with Milos Loncarevic) with something entirely different; a high concept action thriller that is about as Hollywood as they come. That’s to say that everything is overblown, from premise to location and effects, and – like so many of its genre – it’s entirely throwaway.

Tides are turning...
Has Jack Sparrow met his match? He’s in London, facing piracy charges, has no crew, no ship and – seemingly – no hope. But, of course, keeping Jack behind bars wouldn’t make for much of a film and so, following a beautifully-choreographed escape through the streets of London, a scene-stealing cameo from Keith Richards as Jack’s worldly-wise father and reunion with feisty former love Angelica (Penelope Cruz), Jack is soon ensconced on the ship of the legendary Blackbeard (Ian McShane), on the hunt for the fabled Fountain of Youth. On his tail is pirate nemesis Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) but, as the journey gets increasingly dangerous, the old foes may find that they need to work together if they are to make it home alive…
